It starts cooling immediately. It can be set as low as 60 degrees, has a remote control, and it will cool several rooms. Love this AC! I have also bought a smaller one for another room. I highly recommend this AC unit! It really is icy cold!! Memphis is hot and humid. It has already hit 100 several days in a row. This one unit is all we have right now for 4 rooms and our hallway. We are very comfortable, even will the sweltering heat outside. It blows very hard, and very cold. Very nice looking units as well, I like the fact that the remote control shows you the ambient room temperature even when the unit is not on. Very easy to install, I did it myself (I am a 120 pound woman) and only needed the hubby to help lift the unit to the window after I had put in the sleeve. The hardware provided is very secure, I have no fears whatsoever of the unit coming out of the window. Shop around though for the best price with shipping and tax (if any).
